Finding the best fleeces for hiking can make all the difference when getting outdoors. A good fleece is an essential mid-layer piece. I’ll be sharing my favorite ones to keep you warm, not just for hiking but for everyday wear, too!

This guide will break down the different types of fleeces and which one is best suited for you, so you can find the option that works for you.

It’s worth noting that there are hundreds of fleeces on the market, and I haven’t tried them all. This list focuses on the ones I have tried and recommend based on my opinion. They have all held up over the years, and I continue to take them on adventures.

Why a Fleece?

The perfect layering system starts with a base layer, a mid-layer, and then an outer layer. Usually, you will add or take off a layer depending on the climate, the activity, and how hard you are working.

Fleeces are an essential mid-layer piece because they provide warmth by trapping in heat. They are also breathable, and some have really great moisture-wicking properties.

I have categorized the following fleeces into three categories: all-around, cozy, and technical. These are my own categories to help show which fleeces would be best for different scenarios.

Best All-Around Fleeces

Patagonia Micro D 1/4 Zip Fleece Pullover

One of my favorite fleeces is the Microdini 1/2 Zip Fleece, but it seems to be discontinued, as it’s not available on Patagonia or retailers. The Micro D 1/4 Zip is a very similar fleece and is one of the best fleeces for hiking.

  • Warmth: Lightweight, breathable, and easy to layer.
  • Fit/Design: Regular/relaxed fit, with a half-zip design (also available in full zip).
  • Ideal use: Great for hiking, casual wear, or layering.
  • Sizing: I sized down (XS) for a more fitted look, but could wear my regular size (S).
  • Performance: Moves easily with activity, breathable, and dries quickly after light sweat. It has an anti-pilling finish, so it wears really well over time.

The Fjallraven Vardag Pile Fleece has become one of my favorite fleeces because of the perfect fit and functionality. This fleece is an investment that will last you decades.

  • Warmth: Midweight with a wind-resistant inner layer for extra insulation. Slightly bulkier, so layering is tough.
  • Fit/Design: Relaxed fit with a more structured silhouette.
  • Ideal use: Perfect for casual wear, pre/post-movement, or light outdoor activity.
  • Sizing: True to size. I wear my regular size (S).
  • Performance: Wind-resistant lining and midweight fleece make this a warm layer (almost feels like a jacket), though it’s not ideal as a lightweight hiking layer.

The Patagonia Synchilla Fleece

The Patagonia Synchilla Fleece is an all-around great fleece and one of the best fleeces for hiking. Patagonia releases new colors all the time so there is a color for everyone.

  • Warmth: Midweight, but can still layer on top.
  • Fit/Design: Relaxed fit. There is also a 1/4 zip option.
  • Ideal use: Perfect for hiking, outdoor activities, and casual everyday wear.
  • Sizing: I sized down (XS), but my regular size (S) would be better, as the arms are a bit too short.
  • Performance: Soft and breathable, it offers good warmth retention when taking a break on a hike. Fleece wears well over time!
The Patagonia Synchilla Fleece

The Patagonia Retro Pile Fleece is a classic! I have had several colors over the years and love that there are fresh colors each season.

  • Warmth: Midweight, but can still layer on top.
  • Fit/Design: Regular/relaxed fit, with a half-zip design (there is also a full-zip) and pockets. Slightly boxy, giving it a retro silhouette.
  • Ideal Use: Perfect for casual wear, pre/post-movement, or light outdoor activity.
  • Sizing: I sized down (XS) for a more fitted look, but could wear my regular size (S).
  • Performance: Breathable and cozy, maintains warmth over hours of wear. The fleece material slightly flattens over time, but it still functions perfectly.

The Arc’teryx Kyanite Hoody is one of the best fleeces for hiking because it’s a midlayer for hikes and chilly days. It’s built for the outdoors in mind with the abrasion-resistant face and soft interior.

  • Warmth: Lightweight and breathable. Easy to layer.
  • Fit/Design: Fitted, but comfortable. The hood provides more warmth if needed, but there is an option without.
  • Ideal Use: Hiking and any movement.
  • Sizing: I wear my normal size (S).
  • Performance: Breathable, flexible, and moisture-wicking. It holds up well under active movement while retaining warmth. Warmer than the previous three options.

Honourable Mentions

There are a lot of fleeces for hiking out there—so these are more that I have heard great things about and wanted to mention.

How to Choose the Best Fleece

If performance matters most and you want to wear it on the trail, go for technical. Grid fleece that’s moisture-wicking will help be a good fit. A great layering piece, but it won’t be as warm as the others.

If everyday life and hiking matter most, the midweight options give the best all‑around fit.

If coziness matters most, the heavy fleeces are unbeatable for warmth and comfort.
